Out of Context: Recent Works by Adrian Johnston

A bridge for art and community, these works are an exercise in hospitality, a vision for the creation of redemptive culture. The works portray people upside down, roots in bloom, and light in dark. Art, which Hans-Georg Gadamer has described as play, symbol, and festival, exists out of the context of everyday experiences of war, futility, and division. It offers paradox in prayer, and asks for unity in celebration.

“Let me learn by paradox

that the way down is the way up,

that to be low is to be high,

that the broken heart is the healed heart,

that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,

that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,

that to have nothing is to possess all,

that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,

that to give is to receive,

that the valley is the place of vision.”

—Prayer from Valley of Vision
